South Florida is fortunate to have a number of farm stores, markets carrying local produce, and u-pick farms. Always look at signs or ask to see if the item was locally grown and to learn growing methods (certified organic, no synthetic chemicals, minimal synthetic chemicals, or conventional). U–pick farms have been disappearing as land is used for exburban homes, but many are still here. A new trend is emerging: hydroponic growers in urban areas. If you are planning to visit a farm for u–pick, be sure to call first to be sure the produce you want to pick is available. Many only accept cash. For areas outside of South Florida, check pickyourown.org. Be sure to also check our farmers’ market section; the vendor you’re looking for may be listed there instead (a “farmers’ market” has multiple vendors).
Listed from north to south. “•” distinguishes those markets/farms with certified organic produce. For the remainder, most produce sold is grown with far fewer synthetic chemicals than produce sold in grocery stores. Ask the farmer about specific growing methods. Organic certification is not yet available for hydroponically grown produce. Some farmers, however, are already using nutrient solutions that should qualify if organic hydroponic standards are developed.
